Pony club losing grip on reins

05/May/2010

THE future of the Bindoon Range Pony Club is in jeopardy with membership numbers dwindling to their lowest in the club’s 12-year history.

Club secretary Ros Maindok said they were down to just four members, and would be forced to close if they can’t attract more interest.

She said the club, which operates on the grounds of the Catholic Agricultural College, had a fantastic enclosed dressage arena, cross country course and open spaces for trail rides in the surrounding area.

“If we don’t get more members we will be forced to close,” she said.

“It’s just such a shame when there are so many horse-loving people in the area already; why would they want to travel even further away when we’re right here.”

Head coach Judy Rose said when they had more members at the club, they would be able to offer a wider range of activities and competitions.

She said another dozen memberships would significantly change the club environment, and would allow them to book in specialist coaches and sessions for riders.

“We are hoping to find active parents who are keen to join the committee and get involved in the club, and take pride in our club and our grounds.”

At the moment, members are driving to Moora to interact with other riders and Mrs Maindok said they want to be able to develop into a club with enough members to sustain regular home meets.

Riders aged up to 25 years are welcome to join the club. Contact Ros Maindok on 9576 0285.

SAVE WHITFORDS HORSE BEACH

Joondalup mayor Troy Pickard said yesterday that the system was not about excluding people and penalties but gave priority to users of designated activities.

He said the horse exercise area was no longer appropriate in an urban setting.

Mr Pickard said owners of 21,000 registered dogs were calling for a bigger dog beach.... See more

WA Racehorse Owners Association executive officer Darren McAullay said abolishing the horse exercise area would be disappointing and WA Trainers Association president Bruce Hyde said there were still enough horses to justify keeping the horse beach open.

Australian Kiteboarding School owner Darren Marshall, who operates from Pinnaroo Point, said he was happy with the proposal.

The plan was endorsed by the council on Tuesday and will be open for public comment for six weeks
